eContentplus programme:
towards a single
European space
for digital content
On 9 March 2005 the European Parliament and the Council
approved the eContentplus Programme, a multiannual
Community programme to make digital content in Europe
more accessible, usable and exploitable. The programme aims
to establish a single European space for digital content, by
overcoming the barriers relating to the multiplicity of
languages, cultures and practices of public administration and
enterprises that hinder the establishment of cross border
online services in Europe.
The indicative budget of the programme is 149 million euro
for the period 2005-2008. The first call for proposals is
expected soon, with the deadline on 24 November 2005. The
Commission has also published a call for independent experts
for the eContentplus programme. The call is open until 31
June 2009. The list of experts will remain valid until 31
December 2009.
The Programme addresses specific market areas where
development has been slow: geographic content (as a key
constituent of public sector content), educational content,
cultural, scientific and scholarly content. The Programme also
supports EU-wide co-ordination of collections in libraries,
museums and archives and the preservation of digital
collections so as to ensure availability of cultural, scholarly
and scientific assets for future use.
According to the Commissioner for Information Society and
Media, Viviane Reding, the eContentplus programme will
facilitate the production and distribution of online European
content, thus stimulating innovation and creativity.
The eContentplus programme was presented to the Greek
public during an information day organised by the National
Documentation Centre, as NCP for the programme, on 8 July
2005, in Athens. The key speaker, Yolanda Arevalo-Torres,
official of the European Commission, presented the objectives
and activities of the programme, as well as the first call for
proposals. More than 170 representatives of the public and
private sector, active in the area of digital content, attended
the event.
Ground-breaking
discoveries at the frontiers
between innovative
sciences
One of the most distinguished Greek scientists, Ari Patrinos,
Associate Director of the Office for Biological and
Environmental Research in the US Department of Energy, has
recently visited Athens and gave a very interesting speech on
the latest developments in biomedicine and biotechnology. Dr
Patrinos coordinates the US research activities in the sectors
of biology, energy and environment, while he has also made a
significant contribution to the mapping of the human genes,
one of the most important recent scientific achievements. In
his interview, he talks about the US research and innovation
policies, the main features of science today, the applications of
genomics in medicine and the environment, as well as the
future of energy for our planet.
