Communicating the achievements of European research:
CER 2005 - Descartes Prize for Research 2005
The achievements of European research and the European
scientists themselves have been in the spotlight recently
thanks to two important initiatives of the European
Commission: the European conference "Communicating
European Research 2005 (CER 2005)", that took place in
Brussels on 14-15 November 2005, and the Descartes Prize
award ceremony, realized in London, on 2 December 2005.
Both events shared a common goal: the distinction of
European research excellence, the wide recognition of
European scientists, and the improvement of the public's
awareness of science.
CER 2005 was one of the major EU events for science
communication and the promotion of the added value of
research results. The event was attended by more than 3,000
scientists, researchers, journalists and representatives of
business and governmental bodies, from 53 countries. The main
conclusion was that communication between the scientific
community and the wider public is a dynamic and continuous
procedure. This procedure demands a constant effort and
constitutes an obligation for both the media and the scientists.
Regarding the Descartes Prize for Research, Greek scientists
had a remarkable presence. Specifically, professors Costas
Soukoulis, from the Foundation for Research and Technology
- Hellas (FORTH), and Ioannis Seiradakis, from the Aristotle
University of Thessaloniki, are among those awarded the
European Descartes Prize for excellence in scientific research.
The final shortlist included projects involving Dimitris
Niarchos, Director of the Hellenic National of Scientific
Research (NCSR) "Demokritos", and Professor Stavros
Katsanevas from the French Centre National de la Recherche
Scientifique (CNRS).
"Innovation, Research and Technology" attended the two
above-mentioned events and presents the main conclusions,
as well as the interesting interviews of the following key
players in European research: Istvan Palugyai, President of the
European Union of Scientific Journalists' Associations and
science journalist in the Hungarian newspaper Népszabadsag,
Prof. C. Soukoulis, coordinator of the EXEL project (winner
of the EU Descartes Prize for Research), Georges Vladas,
Responsible for the Descartes Prize, DG Research, European
Commission, Dr Ene Ergma, President of the Descartes
Grand Jury for Research, Mr Andrea Bandelli, member of the
Descartes Communication Prize President's panel.
Moreover, Mr Kurt König, Head of Unit of CORDIS, talked
to us about the 15th anniversary of the launch of CORDIS,
the Community Research and Development Information
Service that started operating in 1990 with three separate
databases and now comprises 200 services and some 210,000
pages. It is also accessed every month by around 250,000
users from more than 170 countries.
International Conference
for Patents in Athens
The future of Intellectual Property infrastructure in Europe
and the contribution of the epoline® products and services,
from the users’ perspective, were the main topics of the
epoline® Annual Conference 2005 that took place in Athens,
on 23-24 November 2005. The Conference was organised by
the European Patent Office, in cooperation with the Greek
Industrial Property Organisation, and attracted more than 350
professionals from the European patent sector.
"Innovation, Research and Technology" attended the
Conference and presents an overview, along with the
interviews of Prof. Alain Pompidou, President of the EPO, and
John Bambridge, the director of epoline®.
