Research and innovation: indicators, trends and
perspectives in Greece and the rest of Europe
What are the trends and perspectives of the European
Research Area? How competitive is European research and
innovation, compared to the US, Japan and China? What is the
role of the national research policies? Such issues have been
recently put under the spotlight, in view of the restructuring of
the European programmes and policies for research.
The 7th Framework Programme for Research, as well as the
Competitiveness and Innovation Programme are expected in
2007. At the same time, an experts’ committee recommends
the commitment of the political, business and social leaders
for radical changes in favour of innovation "before it’s too
late". The achievement of the Lisbon goals demands more
investment in knowledge and innovation, at national and
European level.
How is Greece responding to the new trends? The latest
indicators for research and innovation in Greece, compared
to those of the other European countries, are not particularly
encouraging. Greece is in 23rd place in innovation, while the
economic growth seems to have weak links with the research
activities and the promotion of innovation. Greece is,
therefore, promoting radical changes as well through both the
evaluation of the research institutes and the revision of the
legal and organisational framework for scientific research,
technology and innovation.
The "Innovation, Research and Technology" magazine
presents statistics for research and innovation in Greece and
the rest of Europe from the following recent reports:
European Innovation Scoreboard 200, EU Industrial R&D
Investment Scoreboard 2005 and the Aho Group Report
"Creating an Innovative Europe" 2006.
The European Commissioner for Science and Research, Janez
Potocnik, highlights the priorities of European research, as well
as the needs for more investment and close collaboration at
national and European level. He also refers to the new, more
flexible Framework Programme, to the business support
services provided by the Competitiveness and Innovation
Programme (CIP), as well as to good examples of sustained
efforts to support R&D in third countries such as China.
The Director of the National Hellenic Research Foundation
(NHRF) Prof. D. Kyriakidis refers to the successful evaluation
of NHRF and to its activities that concern not only basic
research, but also the public awareness and understanding of
science. He also highlights the restructuring of the legal and
organisational framework of the Greek research system and
gives his assessment of future trends in science.
10 years "Innovation,
Research and Technology"
This issue celebrates 10 years of consecutive publication of
our magazine - one of the few Greek magazines specialised in
research, technological development and innovation.
"Innovation, Research and Technology" focuses on two main
priorities of the European Commission: the Information
Society and Innovation. It is circulated to more than 5,000
recipients from the Greek research, academic and business
communities, and addresses the need for timely and reliable
information. It is available in print and digital form.
Initially, the magazine mainly contained information on new
technologies and European research programmes. Gradually,
its content has been enriched to include research news and
events, interviews, etc, in order to better serve its goal: to
highlight the contribution of research and innovation to
economic growth and competitiveness.
