The new role of European
universities in the
knowledge economy
The European Commission has recently published a
Communication on how Europe’s universities can contribute
to the creation of a true knowledge economy. The
Communication identifies 9 areas where changes should be
made, suggesting the following as the key to success: Break
down the barriers around universities in Europe; Ensure real
autonomy and accountability for universities; Provide
incentives for structured partnerships with business
community; Provide the right mix of skills and competences
for the labour market; Reduce the funding gap and make
funding work more effectively in research and education;
Enhance interdisciplinarity and transdisciplinarity; Activate
knowledge through interaction with society; Reward
excellence at the highest level; Make the European higher
education area and the European Research Area more visible
and attractive in the world.
∞ new organisation that will operate as a flagship for
promoting excellence in higher education, research and
innovation in the EU - the European Institute of Technology -
has already been proposed by the Commission. Details of its
structure and operation will be released shortly.
Relevant reforms are also proposed by the Centre for
European Policy Studies and the OECD Education Ministers.
The CEPS study concludes that investing in education can
increase employment and competitiveness. The OECD
Meeting, that took place on 27-28 June 2006, in Athens,
identified six areas where reforms are needed: Funding,
Equitable education, Focus on learning, Responsiveness and
diversity, Research and innovation, and Migration and
internationalisation.
Regarding Greek universities, their performance in innovation
and their connection with the business community were
discussed in an event organised by the Liaison Office of the
University of Athens. The main priorities for the universities
in Greece should be: Linking university research with
business, Increasing funding from public and private sources,
and Focusing on concrete scientific fields where the country
has a comparative advantage.
