Women and Science
Equality in academic studies, inequality in scientific careers: this
is the current picture of European research, despite the
important measures that have already been taken to enhance
the representation of women in science and technology, at
national and European level. The recent publication of the
Commission "She Figures 2006" reveals important aspects
concerning the circumstances and the perspectives of women
in science. Only 29% of the European research potential is
made up of women, while the growth rate for the participation
of women in science is lower than that for men, meaning that
if the trend persists, the gender inequality will be aggravated.
The extensive article presents the current situation of women
in European research, the perspectives and the difficulties they
face in their scientific career, the social and economic issues
that boost inequality, as well as the actions taken to improve
the participation of women in the S&T sector. Particular
emphasis is given to the mapping of the Greek Female Research
Potential in Science - a project of the National Documentation
Centre, within the framework of the PERIKTIONI network.
eContentplus programme
gives 27,3 million euro
for digital content
An information day to present the second call for proposals
for the eContentplus programme, the multiannual
Community programme to make digital content in Europe
more accessible, usable and exploitable, was organised
recently, in Athens, by the National Documentation Centre -
the National Contact Point for the programme. The budget of
the second call is 27,3 million euro.
The main speaker of the event was Mr S. Pilos, representative
of the European Commission (DG Information Society and
Media), who underlined that the programme aims to support
the development of multi-lingual content for innovative, on-
line services across the EU, as well as to promote leading-edge
technical solutions to improve accessibility and usability of
digital material in a multilingual environment. The Programme
addresses specific market areas where development has been
slow: geographic, educational, cultural, scientific and scholarly
content. The Programme also supports the EU-wide co-
ordination of collections in libraries, museums and archives
and the preservation of digital collections.

Greek Research and Innovation
in the 2nd Science and
Technology Week
Thirty-five research centres, universities and enterprises
interactively presented the results of their research activities
during the "Science and Technology Week" organised for the
second consecutive year by GSRT in Athens (Zappio Megaro)
from 28 June to 5 July 2006. Visitors had the opportunity to be
informed of the latest achievements, products and activities of
research and scientific agencies, and also to understand the role
of science and technology in daily life.
Among the participants was, for the second time, the
National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF). The
Foundation organised a series of concurrent events
(speeches, discussions, viewing of scientific documentaries,
exhibitions) and presented its work, with a focus on
innovative actions arising from its Institutes' research
programmes and exhibiting applications of modern technology
in environmental, historical or cultural issues. Moreover,
visitors could get informed on the activities and services of
the National Documentation Centre, such as the digital
library, which provides access to a large number of scientific
data bases and electronic journals as well as the information
and support services for research programmes and the
transfer of technology.

NIS-NEST project

Promoting research
cooperation in Russia and
the Eastern European countries
The enhancement of the EU cooperation with Russia and the
Eastern European countries in the field of novel exploratory
research is the main objective of the project "Opening up the
New and Emerging Science and Technology in NIS countries
(NIS-NEST)", which is coordinated by the Greek National
Documentation Centre (EKT) and co-funded by the 6th
Framework Programme ("New and Emerging Sciences and
Technology" programme).
The trans-national consortium of the project is composed of
seven partners originating from Greece, France, the Russian
Federation, Ukraine, Belarus and the Republic of Moldova. The
project includes a mapping exercise, which is expected to result
in a searchable database containing the profiles of active
researchers and research organisations/units from the Eastern
European countries. Moreover, a series of awareness events and
workshops will be realised, tailored to meet the needs of the
Eastern researchers. Particular emphasis is given to recording
and evaluating the different social and cultural conditions for
research in the countries involved, as well as the diverse funding
schemes for research and the structures of scientific careers in
the participating Eastern European countries.
