Europe should provide adequate suppor t to young
researchers at the beginning of their scientific career, when
they have new ideas and energy, but lack the means to
develop their projects. This was underlined by the Chairman
of the European Research Council, Prof. Fotis Kafatos, in an
interview given to our magazine.
The responsibility of the ERC is to offer, through the "Ideas"
programme, to the best researchers the resources to
develop their creativity and reach their full potential in
frontier research, starting with early stage researchers.
Regarding research in Greece, Prof. Kafatos believes that a
stable national programme, based on meritocracy, is needed
to boost the investment in research and to make scientific
careers attractive for young people. Besides, a country can
prosper only by investing effectively in the best it has.
The first five Regional Innovation Poles that will enhance
the technological excellence and the competitiveness of
the Greek regions, both at national and international level,
have been recently announced by the General Secretariat
for Research and Technology. The initiative is implemented
within the framework of the Operational Programme for
Competitiveness, with a budget of around 20,2 million euro
for the period 2005-2008.
The relevant call for proposals was published in January
2006. Twelve proposals were submitted and, as per the
evaluation results, the following were successful: the
Regional Innovat ion Pole of Thessaly (coordinator :
Technology Park of Thessaly), the Regional Innovation Pole
of Central Macedonia (coordinator: Aristotle University of
Thessaloniki), the Regional Innovation Pole of Western
Macedonia (coordinator: University of Western Macedonia),
the Regional Innovat ion Pole of Western Greece
(coordinator: Patras Science Park) and the Regional
Innovation Pole of Crete (coordinator: University of Crete).
The Regional Innovation Poles are consortia of public and
private bodies (universities, research centres, technology
and science parks, chambers, associations, companies, SMEs,
etc), aiming to combine their complementary activity and
visibility for the competitiveness and the growth of certain
regions. The Poles are a powerful tool for policy makers since,
despite the international cooperation, the innovation is still
developed, to a large extent, through the cooperation of
enterprises and research organisations at local level.
Centres IRIDE and IRENE, in cooperation with the relevant
thematic group of the IRC Network. EKT will be participating
in the event as coordinator of the IRC Hellenic.
European ICT Conference on Research and Technology
Development: SMEs that are active in the ICT sector are
invited to participate in the "European ICT Conference on
Research and Technology Development" that will be held in
Istanbul, on 29-30 January 2007. The event is being
organised by the Turkish organisations TUBITAK, TAGES and
TBV, within the framework of EASIER and SEE Innovation
projects. EKT will be participating as a partner of EASIER - a
project aiming to boost the competitiveness of ICT SMEs
through European programmes, regional networks and
international cooperation agreements.
