Traveling through Space and Time, exploring oceans and
active volcanoes, sightseeing around the planet billions of
years ago and other interactive experiences that bring
science closer to society are available in research centres
and museums all over Greece.
"Communicating research and engaging with the public is
more than a priority, it’s an obligation", according to the
European Commissioner for Research J. Potocnik, "not only
because research and science constitute one of society’s
driving forces to achieve progress, but even more so,
because research has a dai ly impact on al l European
citizens". The initiatives for communicating research and
science are increasing lately, in number and variety, in
Greece and the other European countries. A Eurobarometer
survey has shown that 45,3% of European citizens are
interested in research and technology, but acqui re
insufficient information. Only 11,3% of the Europeans visit
science museums, with Greeks being among the lowest
percentages.
Some important scientific attractions that Greeks can enjoy
in science centres and museums are presented in this
issue: in Athens the GAIA Centre for Environmental Research
and Education at the Goulandris Natural History Museum,
the Digital Planetarium at the Eugenides Foundation,
"Tholos" the new dome-shaped Virtual Reality "Theatre" of
the Foundation of the Hellenic World, the Thessaloniki
Science Centre and Technology Museum NOESIS and the
CretAquarium Thalassocosmos in Crete.

A European meeting for future Europe’s planetary exploration
programme was held on 15-16May 2007 in Athens, organised
by the European Science Foundation (ESF) and the European
Space Agency (ESA). 88 scientists from 11 European
countries agreed on scientific goals and provided an
ambitious roadmap to examine Mars and the Moon. The
scientists identified three target bodies to be visited by a
number of international missions in the timeframe 2013-
2035: the planet Mars, the Moon, and Near-Earth Objects,
which are asteroids orbiting the Sun within reach of the Earth.
Another important scientific meeting on the recent
discoveries of the Cassini-Huygens mission in Saturn took
place on 4-8 June 2007, in Athens. It was the meeting of
the Project Science Group (PSG) of the Cassini-Huygens
programme, the main research collaboration programme
between ESA and NASA. More than 150 leading scientists
from Europe and the US attended the conference.
