Great digital collections of Greek history and civilization of
the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) are now
available on the webpage: www.ekt.gr/pandektis. The hard-
copy research collections of 3 Institutes of NHRF (Institute
of Neohellenic Research, Institute of Byzantine Research,
Institute of Greek and Roman Antiquity) have been digitized
and made available by the National Documentation Centre,
within the framework of the project PANDEKTIS, which was
officially presented at an event held in Athens on 20th
December 2007.
Pandektis is a brand new electronic database useful to all
those interested in Greek hi story and cul ture. I t i s
comprised of branches in the guise of separate sub-
databases covering a wide spectrum of subjects and
periods - albeit the emphasis, in quantative terms, has been
placed on Neohellenic research. Though Pandektis can be
accessed only in Greek for the moment, it remains a
database with unique content of its kind that can be
thoroughly and freely searched through the Web so that it
can have the widest diffusion possible for the benefit of the
scholarly community but also of lay interest groups and the
wider public.

The Joint Research Center (JRC) was established 50 years
ago by the Commission of the European Communities as a
scientific and technological research centre based in
Brussels. The JRC was originally founded under the Euratom
Treaty with the aim of contributing to nuclear safety and
security. Its mission expanded in the years that followed,
and it became a distinct Directorate General of the EU. It
currently provides scientific and technical support for the
conception, development, implementation and monitoring
of pol icies for a safer , cleaner , heal thier and more
competitive Europe.
The JRC is comprised of seven institutes in five Member
States (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and
Spa in) : The Ins t i tute for Reference Mater i a l s and
Measurements, The Institute for the Protection and
Security of the Citizens, The Institute for Environment
and Sustainability, The Institute for Health and Consumer
Protection, The Institute for Transuranium Elements, The
Institute for Energy, and The Institute for Prospective
Technological Studies. The Institutes employ around
2.700 scientists. The JRC publishes numerous scientific
references , ar t i c l es and informat i on news l et ters ,
presents studies at conferences and scientific journals
and organizes congresses for the disseminat ion of
scientific knowledge.

The Greek Research & Technology Network (GRNET) recently
inaugurated the next generation optical fibre network,
GRNET3. The Network has been developed under the
Operational Programme “Information Society” to provide
advanced Internet services and integrate the Greek Research
and Education community, into the Global Knowledge Society.
GRNET3 signals the transition from the model of renting
telecom circuits to the long-standing leasing of optical fibres
with a total length of 7,000 kilometres, which connects 90
research and education organisations and allows data
transmission at extremely high speeds (at multiple
wavelengths of 10 Gbps). The Network supports circuit
switching at great capacity and provides broadband Internet
access to more than 500,000 members of the education
community (pupi ls, students, teachers, professors,
researchers, academics, etc).

The response of the European research community to the
first FP7 calls for proposals is presented by Dr Christos
Vasilakos, Counsellor for Research & Technology at the
Permanent Representation of Greece to the EU, in an
interview given to our magazine. Dr Vasilakos underlines
that Greece’s participation is satisfactory, both in terms of
proposals submi tted and success rate. As Nat ional
Representat ive in the European Strategy Forum for
Research Infrastructures, he stresses that Greece excelled
to contest for the hosting of the km3 NEutrino Telescope
(KM3NET), as wel l as to participate in 14 (out of 35)
proposals for the large-scale Pan-European research
infrastructures.
According to Dr Vasilakos, Europe has excellent innovation
potent ial at i ts disposal , but lags behind i ts main
competitors, Japan and the US, mainly due to the lower
private investment and the fragmentation of the public
research base. As far as Greece is concerned, the aim is that,
by 2013, Greek participation will approach 5% of the total FP
budget. Along with the increase in national funding, a Greek
Research and Innovation Area will be developed to compete
with our European partners.
