Corallia: Innovation
Made in Greece
The He l l eni c Technology Clus ter s
Ini t i at i ve - Cora l l i a - i s a pioneer
initiative for the establ ishment and
development of competitive technology
clusters in knowledge-intensive and
export-oriented industrial segments in
Greece. I t act s as a hub for a l l
innovation actors, including industry,
academia, research, venture capital,
business angels and other investors.
Corallia started operating in 2006, co-
funded by the Hel lenic Mini stry of
Development (3rd Community Support
Framework, Operational Programme
"Competitiveness").
EKT's International
Conference on Open Access
Repositories and Open Access Journals
have been on the spotl ight at the
International Conference "Open Access
Infrastructures: the Future of Scientific
Communication" that was successfully
organized by the National Documentation
Centre (EKT) on December 15-16, 2008 in
Athens. The Conference (www.
openaccess.gr/conference2008) attracted
more than 300 stakeholders that lead the
developments behind these new open-
access principles for organizing and
disseminating scientific knowledge
worldwide.
Open Access i s an ini t iat ive of the
academic and research community for
free, immediate and permanent online
access to digital scienti f ic content.
Fol lowing international trends, ΕΚΤ
deve lops nat iona l Open Access
infrastructures aimed at providing open
access to sc i ent i f i c and cul tura l
content: the Repository Helios of the
National Hellenic Research Foundation,
Repositories for the Humanities and
Health Sciences, the National Archive of
PhD Theses, as well as international
Open Access Scientific Journals.
The keynote speaker, Prof. Jean-Claude
Guedon (Department of Comparative
Literature, University of Montreal, Vice-
President of the Canadian Society for
the Humanities and Social Sciences), in
an interview given to our magazine,
under l ines that Open Access i s
progressing very well and rather rapidly
in the world. On the so-called "green
road", the number of repos i tor ies
cont inues to grow br i skl y and the
number of mandates to deposit also
increases.
The representative of the European
Commission Dr Kyriakos Baxevanidis, in
his interview, refers to the general
request of the scientific community to
create a new political framework for
the Open Access area. The meeting
with the research tutor, two years ago,
in which more than 30.000 scientists
and researchers signed for immediate
action, was the focal point of this issue.
As a result, the European Commission
did indeed respond swiftly.
Industrial Property
Organisation awards
distinguished inventors
The He l l eni c Indus t r i a l Proper ty
Organi sat ion (OBI ) has rewarded
distinguished Greek inventors for their
cont r ibut ion to the technologi ca l
progress of the country at a special
ceremony within the framework of the
ce l ebrat ion of 20 year s of OBI ' s
operation. The institution of Inventors
Awards was created in 2002.
The Awards 2008 were conferred upon
patents in the fol lowing areas: new
technologi es in the product ion of
ceramic structures, genetically modified
cel l l ines of lepidoptera insects, dry
powder inhaling, a logical cube game,
innovat ive shoemaking equipment,
devices on telemeter signs, Artemia
cyst brooding, and tracing RNAi for
cancer protein targets.
Smart materials for
protecting/cleaning surfaces
by Greek nanotechnology
company
Wide ranges of product s that
waterproof and protect surfaces, based
on nanotechnology mater i a l s , are
produced by the Greek company
NanoPhos. These materials respond to
environmental stimuli with particular
changes in some variables. Depending
on changes in external conditions, they
change their properties (mechanical,
electrical , visual ), their structure or
composition, or their functions.
In less than 3 years, NanoPhos has been
awarded severa l di s t inct ions and
currently exports its products to Great
Br i tain, Cyprus, Norway, Denmark,
Spain, Portugal, Poland and Bulgaria.
