Highlights
European enterprises
investing in Research
Five Greek companies are included in
the “2011 EU Industrial R & D Invest-
ment Scoreboard” that was recently
published by the European Commis-
sion. TheScoreboardprovides econom-
ic and financial data and analysis of the
top corporate R&D investors from the
EU and from abroad (top 1,400 compa-
nies worldwide, 400 from the EU and
1,000 outside). The Greek pharmaceu-
tical company Pharmathen is in 391st
position, Intralot is 433rd, the indus-
trial equipment company Frigoglass
is 929th, and the software companies
Epsilon Net and MLS Multimedia are
959th and 970th respectively.
Generally, the latest studies on entre-
preneurship in Europe underline that
European companies are increasing
their investments in research, but are
still lagging behind their competitors in
the USA and Asia. Studies are conduct-
ed about the economic impact of the
legal and administrative procedures on
entrepreneurship and, mainly, about
the obstacles that companies face in
critical periods of their business life-
cycles. At the same time, the European
Commission is designing the new Pro-
gramme for the Competitiveness of en-
terprises and SMEs (COSME) which will
run from2014 to 2020with a foreseen
budget of 2.5 billion euros.

2011 L’Oreal-UNESCO Greek Awards
for Women in Science
Three young women researchers were awarded the
Greek Awards 2011 L’Oreal-UNESCO for Women in
Science at a ceremony held in Athens: Dr Magdalene
Krokida (Assistant Professor, Department of Planning
and Analytical Processes, School of Chemical
Engineering, National Technical University of Athens)
for the development of new functional food, Dr
Fotini Lamari (Assistant Professor, Laboratory of
Pharmacognosy and Natural Products Chemistry,
Department of Pharmacy, University of Patras) for the
identification of novel bioactive compounds, and Dr.
Alkistis Bonanos (Natural-astronomer, Researcher at
the Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, National
Observatory of Athens) for measuring the distances to
nearby galaxies.
The Greek L’Oreal-UNESCO Awards are granted to
women researchers who are up to 38 years old, working
at universities or research centres in Greece, in the
areas of Life Sciences and Natural Sciences, and are
distinguished for their research abilities and dedication
to science. The aim of the awards, which are part of an
international programme and are each accompanied
by a financial sum of 10.000 euros, is to reward and
promote the projects selected and to encourage young
scientists to continue their research.
Greek students innovate in food products:
European distinction in the contest
ECOTROPHELIA Europe 2011
4 new eco-innovative food products received awards
during the 1st ECOTROPHELIA Competition organised by
the Federation of Hellenic Food Industries. The first prize
was awarded to a team of students from the University
of Ioannina and from the Greek Open University for the
product “Eco-Parizaki Sea Food”. It is a new idea for the
ecological and substantial utilization of non-commercial
fishery products, in a tasty and nutritious choice of a
seafood deli sausage. Enriched with organic extra virgin
olive oil, natural ingredients and with only 22 calories
per slice, the new seafood product would interest anyone
looking for an alternative nutritious option that is 100%
free of animal fat, saturated fat, chemical preservatives and
artificial colouring.
The product participated in the European ECOTROPHELIA
Competition, under the name “Da Vero-Eco seafood”,
and was the unanimous winner of the first prize. The
other participants came from 11 countries, namely Czech
Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy,
Lithuania, Russia, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.

FORTH participates
in the establishment
of the European
Research Centre
on Computer
Architecture
(EuRECCA)
Three leading research in-
stitutions, Chalmers Univer-
sity in Sweden, Barcelona
Supercomputing Centre and
the Foundation for Research
and Technology (FORTH) in
Crete, announced the estab-
lishment of the European Re-
search Centre on Computer
Architecture
(EuRECCA,
www.eurecca.eu). The aim
of the Centre, which already
includes 50 scientists, is to
develop systems with mul-
ticore processors and an
improved design for greater
efficiency, in order to reach
new generations of products
and innovative technology-
based companies.
Today’s multicore proces-
sors are not being utilized
in a sufficiently intelligent
way. They get too hot and
run slowly because they
are used inefficiently. At
the same time, transistors
are becoming so small that
they will ultimately become
unreliable.
Major European research
organizations are now at-
tempting to create a revolu-
tion in computer architec-
ture. The aim of the Centre
is to make pioneering prog-
ress in the development of
systems involving multicore
processors and paradigms
for their productive pro-
gramming, which should
ultimately result in new gen-
erations of products and in-
novative company start-ups.
