The official statistics for Research & Development (R&D) in Greece,
with indicators for expenditure spent and personnel engaged in R&D
activities, were sent to Eurostat by the National Documentation Center
(
EKT), after numerous years of Greece’s absence. The data for 2011 and
2012
are now available in the Eurostat database and are already used for
framing research and innovation policies, such as Smart Specialisation
Strategies for Greek Regions. Overall findings so far are encouraging as
Gross Domestic Expenditure for R&D reached 0.69 of GDP (EUR 1,338
million) in 2012. Supporting the configuration of evidence-based policies
constitutes a strategic priority for EKT, which applies the “science for
science and innovation policies”. Dr Evi Sachini, director of EKT, points
out that "as a country’s economic growth and prosperity depend on the
resources available for conducting and supporting activities for R&D, R&D
statistics are the basis for the formulation and monitoring of policies, both
at European and national level".
The production of R&D statistics is implemented by EKT after the
assignment from the General Secretariat for Research and Technology,
in cooperation with the Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT). It is
worth noting that ELSTAT and EKT recently signed a Memorandum of
Cooperation concerning the production of Innovation, and Research
and Development statistics. The data and the relevant indicators for 2011
have already been published in EKT's edition "Research & Development
expenditure and personnel in Greece in 2011", that is available online on
the website:
.
WebEKT is the directory
that gathers together all the
websites
developed
and
supported by the National
Documentation Centre (EKT).
In the directory WebEKT one
may find all the activities
and projects the institution
implements or participates
in, while they are accessible
through the various websites.
WebEKT provides an easy-
to-use environment for the
user to navigate through
and discover EKT’s over 60
different websites.
The interface, that is available
in both Greek and English,
facilitates the search for
open scientific and cultural
digital
content

developed
by EKT and, in some cases,
in cooperation with other
organizations. In addition,
WebEKT
presents
digital
applications developed by EKT
in cooperation with cultural
institutions that offer the users
the opportunity to navigate
through important Greek
cultural
monuments
and
historical venues. The online
directory also highlights EKT’s
actions towards Research,
Development & Innovation,
such as the website "Research
and Innovation Metrics". It also
introduces the audience to
the websites of the European
projects it participates in.
The European funded project
PASTEUR4OA
(
Open

Policy Alignment STrategies for
the
National
Documentation
Centre, supports the development
of common policies on Open
Access and Open Data in the
European Union, according to the
recent Recommendation by the
European Commission on "Access
to and preservation of scientific
information" (July 2012), towards
the alignment of policies to the
Horizon 2020 policy on Open
Access to research.
One of the main goals of the
project is to develop and enhance
Open Access strategies and
policies at national level, in a way
that will facilitate the coordination
between member states. The
PASTEUR4OA activities build on
the already existing European
its outcomes, hence creating a
network of centres of expertise
in the member states, that will
develop
coordinated
actions,
aiming at supporting the creation
of policies at national level, with
the guidance of the project
partners.
In addition, PASTEUR4OA held
its kick-off meeting on the 20th
and 21st of February 2014 at the
University of Minho in Portugal.
Aim of the PASTEUR4OA kick-off
meeting was to establish common
ground of understanding, values
and targets amongst partners,
identifying potential problems
which might arise during the
project’s implementation and
discussing the strategic plan in
order to address them.
Openarchives.gr is the largest portal providing a single point of access to
Greek scientific and cultural digital content of high quality. It harvests the
metadata of collections in Greece that are OAI-PMH compatible. Content
providers are libraries, archives, museums, academic and research
institutions from Greece and Cyprus. Through openarchives.gr users can
search for academic dissertations, research articles, books, music scores,
maps, etc., and among topics that span the arts, humanities, sciences and
medicine disciplines.
In the current, new iteration of the service, the layout has been redesigned
in a more user-friendly way and new and improved search and browsing
facilities are offered to facilitate discovery through the rich and diverse
content. The interface is also offered in English. For users, openarchives.
gr provides a user-friendly single-point-of-access to digitized contents
deriving from authoritative sources for their research, school and leisure
projects. For content providers, openarchives.gr offers a unique way
to showcase their important digitized collections and increase their
visibility, and to reach new audiences. The service is maintained and
continuously improved by the National Documentation Centre (EKT).
