Data, open data, linked data, big
data, personal data, metadata….
Data is at the focus of the attention
the last years promising to
revolutionise apps and services,
research and innovation, to
contribute to transparency in
governance, to create new jobs
and to provide the new oil for the
economy…
But what is all this data-related
jargon? How do the different
concepts interrelate? How do they
affect us? What are the stakes? In
this issue’s special we present data
in a nutshell explaining such new
concepts such as data, linked data,
public sector data and also APIs,
data mash-ups, hackathons, cloud
computing, etc, that go with them.
An introduction to basic terms is
followed by a specialized tribute
to EKT’s two main related areas of
activity- open cultural data and
open scientific data. In these areas
EKT is engaged with developing
a national infrastructure of inter-
connected standardized repo-
sitories able to deliver high quality
open and reusable content and
metadata. There is also an article on
the winner applications of the 1st
Greek public sector data hackathon
which was organized in Athens
the past spring and another one
focusing at the Data Journalism
Handbook. Finally 3 key figures
(
Malte Beyer-Katzenberger, Philip
Archer, Michalis Vafopoulos) from
the open, linked governmental
data speak about the latest
developments in the field.

A video clip with the title “Greece:
the ERC makes a difference”,
on the impact of the European
Research Council (ERC) in Greece,
was released recently. To date,
Greece has received almost € 57
million in ERC funding. The video
can be found in Greek (EL) and
in English (EN). The ERC is widely
seen as the flagship of the EU
programmes for research (the 7th
Framework Programme and now
Horizon 2020): it is an EU body led
by scientists, including Nobel Prize
winners, which gives substantial
grants to top researchers.
The clip features three Greek
researchers, talking about the
aim and progress of their pioneer
research, andwhat the ERC funding
means to them, both personally
and in terms of how it has
supported their career. Prof. George
Kordas, who has been awarded two
ERC grants, talks about his project,
NANOTHERAPY, which investigates
new ways of drug delivery for
cancer patients. Dr Effie Fokas, the
only ERC grantee funded in Greece
in the field of Social Sciences
and Humanities talks about her
GRASSROOTSMOBILISE
project,
which examines the social impact
of decisions made by the European
Court of Human Rights on religious
freedom. Dr Maria Fousteri from
the Biomedical Sciences Research
CentreAlexandre Fleming, presents
her TRANSARREST project, about
the impact of a failure of genomic
transcription, which challenges
the stability of the genome and
is a facture in the development
of genetic defects and the
mechanisms underlying disease
processes such as premature
ageing.

open calls. The B2B event
