The current edition of "Innovation
Research & Technology" pays
tribute to the fifth Week of
Innovative Regions in Europe
(
WIRE V) which was successfully
held in Athens, June 12th and
13
th under the auspices of the
Greek EU presidency. WΙRE 2014
was organized by the National
Documentation
Centre
of
Greece (EKT) and the European
Commission
in
collaboration
with the General Secretariat for
Research & Technology. More than
50
speakers from 30 countries and
350
registrants participated in
the event which highlighted the
regional dimension of innovation.
With Europe’s attention to Athens,
the conference succeeded in
promoting the dialogue regarding
how the regions of Southern
Europe can design and implement
regional policies during economic
recession. The new Cohesion
Policy for the programming period
2014- 2020
and the new funding
opportunities for regions provided
the context for this year’s WIRE
and a starting point for productive
discussions.
This edition’s special tribute to the
WIRE 2014 Conference highlights
the most important conference
discussions
and
conclusions.
Smart Specialisation, innovation
and open knowledge economy
emerge as the driving forces for
regional development, growth and
building competiveness in a time
of economic recession. Our readers
will find exclusive interviews with
distinguished
representatives
from EU institutions, the academic
and business world as well as
articles and analysis pointing to
the increasingly important role
of innovation policies, open data

The Community Innovation

2012,
carried out by the
National
Documentation
Centre (EKT) in cooperation
with the Hellenic Statistical
Authority (ELSTAT), has been
completed and the official
statistics has been already
submitted to the European
Statistical Office (Eurostat). This
data submission puts Greece
back in the map of European
indicators for Innovation, after
a 6 year absence.
The Community Innovation

National level.
Following the survey results,
more than 50% of the Greek
enterprises are innovative in at
least one type of innovation,
with
the
majority

innovative
in
marketing
(36.79%)
and organisational
methods (30.24%).
Most enterprises proceed with
the acquisition of machinery,
equipment,
etc.
(73.55%),
while an important share of
enterprises performs Research
&
Development activities for the
development of innovations
(34.08%).
The
