Highlights
The Institute of Historical
Research (IHR) of the National
Hellenic Research Foundation
(NHRF) continued in May and
June2015 incollaborationwith
the Ephorate of Underwater
Antiquities the underwater
survey of the northeast area
of Delos. The underwater
fieldwork project focuses on
one of the neighbourhoods
and port installations that
were created at the height
of Delos’ urbanisation period
on the northeast area of the
island-the Stadion District,
which is partly submerged by
the sea.
The underwater survey is
part of the research project
of Dr Mantha Zarmakoupi,
external research associate in
the Section of Greek & Roman
Antiquity of the Institute of
HistoricalResearchoftheNHRF
and lecturer at the University
of Birmingham, regarding the
city planning of Delos during
the Late Hellenistic period
and was funded this year by
the University of Birmingham
and the Roman Society.
The first fieldwork season
was conducted in October
2014 and was funded by the
Marie Curie Intra-European
Fellowship scheme, hosted by
the NHRF.

The
National
Documentation
Centre (EKT), having as its constant
aim the provision of indicators
and data that primary serve as
a supportive tool for the design
and monitoring of documented
policies,
has
developed
an
overview titled "Research, Devel-
opment and Innovation in Greek
Enterprises - Edition 2015". In the
dedicated section of this issue we
have selected and presented data
and indicators, taken from the
publication, that provide a first
insight in the different aspects
of Research, Development and
Innovation systems in the 13
Greek regions and highlight their
particular characteristics.
The dedicated section includes a
synthetic presentation of indica-
tors for the Greek regions, which
are produced by the official
statistical surveys on Research &
Development and on Innovation,
carried out by EKT, the EKT’s
bibliometrical studies of the
Greek scientific publications, the
National Archive of PhD Theses,
data
concerning
the
Greek
participation in European research
programmes. The production and
availability of the aforementioned
indicators becomes, in fact,
particularly important in view
of the implementation of the
Smart
Specialisation
Strategy
for Research and Innovation at
regional and national level.
In this context we conducted
an interview with the Secretary
General
for
Research
and
Technology Thomas Maloutas,
where he talked about the
National
Smart
Specialisation
Strategy and its importance
towards regional development
and competitiveness. Prof. Th.
Maloutas addresses the key areas
of the Greek economy that have
the potential through research and
innovation to significantly improve
the country’s future growth
prospects, and emphasizes the
need for social benefit return from
research and entrepreneurship.
The Policy Recommendations
for Open Access to Research
Data in Europe (RECODE) project
has recently launched "The
Recommendations
Portal"
a
website dedicated to the project’s
recommendations. Visitors can
access
the
recommendations
by stakeholder type or the
overarching
recommendations
and also learn more about the
RECODE approach. Both the full
report and the Recommendations
summary booklet are available for
downloading in pdf format. The
website content is free for re-use
under the CC BY 4.0 license.
RECODE has leveraged existing
networks,
communities
and
projects to address challenges
within the open access and data
dissemination and preservation
sector. The two overarching
issues identified by the project,
namely the lack of a coherent
open data ecosystem and the
lack of attention to the specificity
of research practice, processes
and data collections, along with
the horizontal analysis of the five
disciplinary case-studies in relation
to the key challenges identified by
the project informed a set of policy
recommendations.

Mediterranean Marine Science
(MMS) is one of themost important
open access electronic journals
published by EKT ePublishing
services. The journal, published
since 1999 by the Hellenic Centre
for Marine Research (HCMR), the
national laboratory of Greece for
all aspects of marine research,
moved to EKT's ePublishing
platform in 2013. In the short
interview presented in this issue of
the magazine (in greek), the Editor-
in-chief and the Manager of MMS
sharetheirthoughtsonthepositive
impact of this collaboration on the
journal, by stressing the fact that it
significantly upgraded the quality
and visibility of the journal.
EKT ePublishing was developed
by the National Documentation
Centre of Greece (EKT) with
an aim to provide open access
to scholarly eJournals, eBooks
and eProceedings, as well as a
range of integrated publishing
services to the country's academic
community. Currently ePublishing
hosts more than 20 peer-reviewed
academic eJournals (thousands
of open access articles) in various
categories and plenty of eBooks
and eProceedings.
