Highlights
Expanding co-operation between
the
National
Documentation
Centre (EKT) and the Institute of
Scientific andTechnical Information
of China (ISTIC) was discussed
during a visit ISTIC paid to EKT
on Monday 29th August. Their
ultimate goal is to strengthen their
relationship in the area of scientific
and technological information
and the promotion of science and
technology in both countries.
Given the fact that in recent
years, the already close relations
between Greece and China have
grown in a number of sectors and
activities other than their close
trade relationship, EKT and ISTIC
discussed further developing their
collaboration which began on 12th
June 2012 with a Memorandum of
Understanding.
During
the
meeting,
both
organisations gave detailed pre-
sentations of their activities. Also
discussed were the principle
features of R&D and Innovation
in Greece and China, particularly
activities relating to the fostering
of
academic
communication
on an international level, the
widest possible dissemination of
knowledge and information in
the area of scientific production
in both countries, the application
of open access policies and the
efforts for a better understanding
of science among the public. The
meeting highlighted a common
approach to goals and activities of
the two organisations, as well as
their aim to promote recognition
of scientific work carried out in
Greece and China. In this context
we conducted an interview with
Tong Hefeng, Director of General
Office of ISTIC, where he talked
about ISTIC activities and the main
characteristics of the Chinese
Innovation System.

The Athens Social Atlas aims at
highlighting and critically analysing
topics concerning the social
geography of Athens through
multiple perspectives, focusing
especially on the past 20 years.
This Atlas is structured much more
loosely than a standard collective
volume. The articles/entries are
classified into 15 main thematic
groups/categories: History, Social
Structure,
Politics,
Economy,
Education, Health, Housing, Ethnic
Groups, Culture, Built Environment,
Planning, Transportation, Infra-
structure, Neighbourhoods and
Social Economy. This Atlas would
not have been possible without
the pro bono participation of
approximately 70 authors, who
provided texts and other material
for thewebsite’s first on-line launch,
in January 2016.
The Department of Geography of
Harokopio University is the main
institutional framework for the
research project of the Atlas. The
French School of Athens in the
context of its research on socio-
spatial transformations in Athens,
it will oversee the translation of the
Atlas’ articles into French and will
contribute in the development of
the project as a research associate.
The National Centre for Social
Research has played a key role in
the production of social atlases
since its foundation. The Hellenic
Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) is
the official producer of statistical
population data for Greece on
census scale. This Atlas would be
much poorer if the authors of the
articles it contains did not make
good use of the detailed and
reliable census data that ELSTAT
has been producing for many
decades through the Population
and Housing Census.
The Atlas project has been funded
from a sponshorhip awarded to
Harokopeio University of Athens
from the Onassis Foundation.

INFO
Citizen science (CS) is scientific
research conducted, in whole or
in part, by amateur or nonpro-
fessional scientists. Citizen science
is sometimes described as "public
participation in scientific research",
participatory
monitoring
and
participatory action research. The
majority of projects of citizen science
concern environmental topics, some
others Earth science and only a small
percentage social sciences and space
science.
Among the good practices that we
find concerning citizen science are:
1. Citizen science projects actively
involve citizens in scientific endeavor
theta generates new knowledge or
understanding.
2. Citizen science projects have a
genuine science outcome.
3. Citizen science is considered a
researchapproachlikeanyother,with
limitations and biases that should be
considered and controlled for.
4. Citizen science project data
and meta-data are made publicly
available and where possible, results
are published in an open access
format.
Finally we should refer to the
important effect that technology
can have on participatory science
efforts, including improving com-
munication
between
formal
scientists and citizen scientists,
enabling or facilitating data col-
lection and analysis, and enhancing
the experience and education of
public participants.
