New services, search tools
and digital content filters,
per historical period, have
been added to improve
the portal SearchCulture.
gr, which provides central
access to and single search
of digital cultural content
produced by the country’s
leading institutions. The user
can use multiple methods
to browse a rich collection
of cultural information on
history,
archaeology,
the
environment, art and music,
from classical times to the
present day.
The
new
services
of
SearchCulture.gr,
which
are
constantly
being
developed by the National
Documentation Centre EKT,
include the homogenous
dating and the hierarchical
classification in historical
periods. Users can search
content by filtering available
results and using time criteria
(time period and historical
period). In addition, they can
browse the portal’s content
either through interactive
timelines or historical period
pages.
SearchCulture.gr
provides
access
to
more
than
160,000 documents from 55
collections from 43 cultural
bodies, with the content
being constantly enriched
with material from new
sources.
All the available digital
documents
have
been
verified and certified by
EKT for the quality of any
accompanying metadata and
homogeneity. This makes the
advanced search and tracking
of documents in a wide range
of fields possible.
openABEKT platform is being offered
as an Integrated Software as a Service
(SaaS) hosted, maintained and
secured by EKT’s Cloud Infrastructure.
It is perfect for libraries and other
content-rich
organizations
with
complex
needs
for
managing
content,
users,
members
and
multiple workflows. It is a cloud based
upgradation for ABEKT, the Integrated
Library System first developed by EKT
in 1986. ABEKT has a large user base
(more than 2,500 libraries, museums,
archives and other organizations).
The openABEKT platform is a
multi-tenant system, which means
that it generates autonomous
web applications for each library.
The application consists of 3
environments: a. Catalogue: an
internal
environment,
accessible
to verified users, where the library
catalogues and manages content
b. Discover: the public access
environment where collections are
open for discovery through browse,
search functions c. Workflows and
Functions: an internal environment
where holdings, patrons, circulation
services, reports and statistics are
managed. Each tenant application
feeds into the central public access
openABEKT Catalogue, a public
access discovery environment which
collects and enables the search of
all content from all libraries using
openABEKT, in a single interface.
Highlights
Notable scientists and start-ups
stand out in national or international
competitions, paving the way for the
diffusion of scientific knowledge,
and demonstrating that when theory
becomes reality and the know-
how of research organizations and
educational institutions is shifted
to business, small or big "miracles"
of innovation happen. In this issue,
we highlight some of the recently
distinguished
Greek
researchers
and entrepreneurs, presenting their
research work and their startups,
transferring a message of optimism.
Five distinguished Greek scientists
were honored with
Bodossaki
Foundation's 2017 Science Awards
for their outstanding performance
and contribution in the areas of basic
science, life sciences, applied and
social sciences. The "ParkAllou" team,
consisting of fourth year students of
the Department of Administrative
Science andTechnology of the Athens
University of Economics and Business,
won the first prize of the
Student
Competition of Digital Innovation
and Entrepreneurship "JA Start
Up 2017"
of Junior Achievement
Greece. This year’s winners of the
fifth
Hellenic
Entrepreneurship
Award HEA
include a computer
programming teaching method, a
‘smart’ food packaging solution, a
traditional Greek health drink, an
online training and recruitment
platform and a quiz-based app that
helps students revise for exams. We
also present the 3 winners of
MITEF
Greece Startup Competition 2017
,
an acceleration program that aims to
identify promising Greek technology
startups and accelerates them to the
global market: Fresh Strips, Exclusivi
and CubeRM. Finally, another Greek
company, CityCrop, received an
important European distinction as
it was awarded as one of the best
European start-ups under the
StartUp
Europe Awards 2016
in the Smart
Cities category.

The event "Open Science:
Critical Issues and Future
Prospects" took place on
Thursday 15 June 2017, at the
National Hellenic Research
Foundation, in the framework
of OpenAIRE project. The Open
Science event organized by
the National Documentation
Centre
(EKT)
provided
a
forum for the discussion and
exchange of ideas and best
practices between the key
stakeholders in the transition to
the open science / open access
paradigm.
The high turnout along with
the lively discussions that
took place confirmed the
increasing interest of the
Greek research community and
other key stakeholders in the
opportunities created by open
science as well as the necessity
and importance of organizing
similar initiatives. The presence
of young researchers creates
further promising prospects for
the adoption of open science
practices.
The first session focused on
the presentation of European
and national initiatives such
as the European strategy on
open access to publications &
data and the European Open
Science Cloud (EOSC). The
second
session
comprised
a series of presentations on
available resources, tools and
training to support researchers
in complying with the Horizon
2020 open access mandate.
