In its relationship with regional
bodies to provide them with
repository
services
for
the
exploitation of valuable digital
content locally collected, EKT
presents two new repositories: the
Macedonian Art Society TECHNI
and the Historical Archive of Greek
Refugees. Both are repositories of
organisations from Thessaloniki
which showcase and highlight
aspects of the city’s cultural output.
The repository service enables
content providers to organise and
make their digital material available
on modern online platforms which
highlight and widely disseminate it.
TECHNI repository:
six decades of
Thessaloniki: To date, there are 182
documents showcasing 6 decades
of the city's cultural activities in the
TECHNI repository, theMacedonian
Art Society. TECHNI, founded in
1951 in post-war Thessaloniki,
brought
together
the
city's
intellectual and artistic forces with
the common goal of developing art
and literature. Enrichment of the
repository is ongoing.

documents and presents archive
material relating to the large wave
of refugees following the Asia
Minor Catastrophy and the Treaty
of Population Exchange from the
Black Sea (Pontus), Asia Minor and
Eastern Thrace. There are oral first
generation refugee testaments
and remarkable archival and
photographic material consisting
of public records and private
collections is being added. So
far, 4,805 documents have been
incorporated.
Five Greek researchers have been
selected for the "Proof of Concept
Grants’ awarded by the European
Research Council (ERC). The
purpose of the grant is tomaximize
the value of exceptional research
which ERC is already supporting by
funding further research to explore
the innovative potential of ideas
arising from the project.
In 2017, through Horizon 2020,
the EU allocated 24 million euro
to ‘Proof of Concept Grants’. ERC
approved 160 proposals from
European researchers who will
each receive 150,000 euro for a
period of 18 months.
The ERC programme, which
has a budget of 13 billion euro
(2014-2020), supports ‘frontier
research’ based solely on scientific
excellence,
in
any
scientific
or
technological
discipline.
Encouraging interdisciplinary and
sponsored research is still at the
forefront of the creation of new
knowledge essential for future
applications.
The
National
Documentation
Centre (EKT), as Horizon 2020
National Contact Point for a
number of individual programmes
(such as ERC), supports the Greek
academic, research and business
communities in their participation.
It covers all stages of the research
project, from preparation of a
proposal to implementation and
exploitation of research results.
According
to
official
data
published by EKT, Greek Research
& Development (R&D) expenditure
reached 1.01% of GDP in 2016,
continuing its upward trend. This
percentage
positions
Greece
19th among the EU28, three
places higher than in 2015 and
for the first time approaching
the percentages of countries
such as Ireland and Spain.
A significant increase in R&D
expenditure was recorded for the
business sector (BES) reaching
740.4 million euro. Importantly,
for the first time, BES made the
biggest contribution to the ‘R&D
Intensity’ indicator (0.43% of GDP).
Public funding remained the
main source of funding for 2016
at 746.8 million euros which
represented 42.6% of the total.
Public funding supported R&D
activities in all sectors and was
the main source of funding for
both HES (higher education
sector) and GOV (public sector).
A significant increase was recorded
for the second largest funding
source, the business sector. The
third main source of funding, the
European Union, has increased
during recent years due to the
implementation
of
Horizon
2020, the current EU Framework
Programme for Research and
Innovation. In 2016, the EU funded
research projects in all sectors,
providing 208.5 million euro
(12.0% of the total), indicating
the high level of competitiveness
of
Greek
organisations.
In terms of R&D personnel, despite
increased
R&D
expenditures,
employment lagged behind. The
Full Time Equivalent (FTE) for R&D
personnel in total and researchers
decreased in relation to 2015.

A new approach to interpreting
the Phaistos Disc was revealed
by Dr. Gareth Owens at an
event held by the National
Documentation Centre and TEI
Crete, onWednesday 7 February
2018. ΤheWelsh linguist stressed
that, based on his many years of
research, the one side of the Disc
refers to the pregnant goddess
that "shines" and the other side
refers to the goddess that "sets",
probably the Minoan goddess
Aphaia.
Dr. Gareth Owens, an expert
on the minoan scripts who has
dedicated more than ten years
to studying the Phaistos Disc
with John Coleman, Professor
of Phonetics, Oxford University,
has succeeded in ‘reading’ 99%
of the Disc and has interpreted
more than 50% of it. Based on
the conclusions of the research,
the Phaistos Disc, the most
well-known Minoan syllabic
inscription of the Bronze Age,
datedtothe17thcenturyBC,500
years before the Trojan War, is a
prayer to the pregnant goddess
and the goddess Aphaia. The
Disc was discovered in 1908
during the Italian excavations
at Phaistos and is dated circa
1,700B.C. Today it is being
exhibited at the Archaeological
Museum in Herakleion.
