Successful European Technology Transfer Forum &
Brokerage event at CEBIT 2005
The international "IRC Future Match 2005" for the
Information and Communication Technologies sector took
place from 10 to 16 March 2005, in Hannover, Germany,
within the frame of the international exhibition CeBIT 2005.
The Forum was co-organised, for the fourth consecutive year,
by the National Documentation Centre (EKT), as coordinator
of the IRC Hellenic, and 17 other Centres of the European
IRC Network.
The Forum attracted 581 public and private enterprises and
research centres from 30 countries. Around 1.000 business
meetings took place and 718 technology profiles were
promoted. Regarding the Greek participation, around 28
enterprises and research institutes realised more than 130
business meetings.
The Forum gave the representatives of the ICT sector the
opportunity to promote their technologies and investigate the
prospects for collaboration with other organisations via joint
business ventures and/or European research projects. Within
the frame of thematic events, they exchanged views on the
current trends and developments of the ICT sector
(development of new products, joint research, industrial
production, license agreement, etc).
New European programmes for research, innovation and
competitiveness (FP7, CIP)
The achievement of strong and sustainable economic growth,
involving the creation of more and better jobs, is the main
objective of the EU according to the announcement of the
European Commission, in February 2005, for a renewed
Lisbon strategy. To this end, actions are needed to make
Europe more attractive for investment and employment, to
encourage business initiatives and facilitate innovation.
Under this framework, on 6 April 2005, the European
Commission announced the new programmes for research,
technology and innovation, covering the period 2007-2013:
the 7th Framework Programme for research and technology
(FP7), and the Competitiveness and Innovation Framework
Programme (CIP).
The proposals for the new programmes, which are still under
negotiation, were formulated upon public consultation, giving
all involved bodies the opportunity to express their needs and
experiences. The main features of the new programmes are
an increase in funding and the simplification of procedures.
The 7th Framework Programme will cover the period 2007-
2013, with an indicative budget of 72,73 billion euro - double
the sum being used to fund FP6. The four main programmes
are:
ñ
Cooperation (collaboration between industry and academia
across Europe in key technology areas)
ñ
Ideas (support of basic research, European Research Council)
ñ
People (mobility of researchers, Marie Curie Actions)
ñ
Capacities (research infrastructures, regional research
clusters, SMEs).
The Competitiveness and Innovation Framework Programme
will cover the period 2007-2013, with an indicative budget of
4,21 billion euro. The CIP will bring together a number of
several existing EU activities dealing with competitiveness and
innovation, European productivity, innovative capacity and
sustainable development as well as environmental issues. It
aims to operate as an "umbrella" for Community programmes
such as eEurope 2005, LIFE, eContent, etc. The three specific
programmes under CIP are:
ñ
Entrepreneurship and Innovation programme (Multiannual
Programme for Enterprise and Entrepreneurship, SMEs and
innovation, LIFE, etc)
ñ
ICT Policy Support Programme (i2010 initiative, eTen,
eContent, MODINIS, etc)
ñ
Intelligent Energy Programme (SAVE, ALTENER, STEER).
The 7th Framework Programme and the Competitiveness and
Innovation Framework Programme are complementary and
supportive of each other for the achievement of the Lisbon
goals.
