Highlights
The improved position of women
in the research and innovation
sector has been a priority of EU
policies since the 1990s. These
policies have encouraged the
participation of women in science
and technology, the promotion of
equalparticipationofbothgenders
in the evaluation committees
of different programmes and
the assurance of equal access
to European sources of funding.
Participation of women in the
European Research Area has been
actively supported by EKT since
2007, however, despite progress
in recent years, gender inequality
continues to exist in the sector of
Research & Innovation. The focal
point of this issue, therefore, is
the position of women in the EU
as presented by the recent survey
‘She Figures 2015’.
Also spotlighted in this issue is the
important work of 3 Greek female
researchers who were awarded
the Greek Prize L’Oreal-UNESCO
2016 ForWomen in Science, as well
as 4 women entrepreneurs who
excelled in the European Union
Women Innovators Prize 2017.
Finally, it features an interviewwith
Zoe Cournia, a researcher at the
Biomedical Research Foundation
of the Academy of Athens, in which
she talked about the successes,
discrimination and the difficulties
of a career in research.
HIRMEOS focuses on monographs
as a significant mode of scholarly
communication in the SSH. The
five platforms participating in
the project -OpenEdition Books,
OAPEN Library, EKT Open Book
Press, Ubiquity Press και Gottingen
University Press- will be enriched
with tools that will enable
identification,
authentication
and
interoperability,
enrich
information and entity extraction,
and enable annotation and the
gathering of usage and alternative
metric data. HIRMEOS will also
enhance the technical capacities
of DOAB, a most significant
indexing service for open access
monographs globally. Project
partners will also develop shared
minimum standards for the
publication of monographs that
will in turn enable their integration
into the European Open Science
Cloud. EKT in particular will
improve the interoperability of its
technical infrastructure for open
access monographs with DOI,
ORCId, FundREf information, entity
recognition services, certification,
annotation and metrics services.
OPERAS-D will in turn support
the five main partners (core
group) of the OPERAS network in
the development of a European
e-infrastructure for open access
publications in the SSH. OPERAS-D
will
address
the
long-term
requirements for the development
of the e-infrastructure, strengthen
community
building
and
develop the network of partners
participating in OPERAS across
Europe. EKT will prepare a desk
review that will identify and
examine existing and emerging
practices in open access SSH
publishing
in
Europe
and
beyond as well as highlight key
stakeholders and core challenges.
The scientific writing activity of
Greek institutes in international
journals for the five-year-period
2000-2014 is presented in
the National Documentation
Centre’s (EKT) new report ‘Greek
Scientific Publications 2000-
2014:
bibliometric
analysis
of
Greek
publications
in
international scientific journals -
Web of Science’.
According to the main findings
of the report, which used data
from the Web of Science, Greek
publications have maintained
their high impact.
In fact, the impact indicator for
Greek publications over the
five-year-period
2000-2014
surpassed the average for EU
and OECD countries
The
percentage
of
Greek
publications cited also have
continued to be higher than
the average for EU and OECD
countries.
The number of publications
produced in recent years has
remained stable, with a slight
decline after 2012, which
was the year with the highest
number of publications.
If the number of publications
in relation to the national
expenditure on Research &
development (R&D) is taken into
consideration, then Greece is
one of the leading countries in
the EU.

addition, collaboration will be
developed with companies from
sectors such as pharmaceutical,
biotechnology, cancer diagnostics

objective of the ACCC will be
to strengthen interdisciplinary
cancer research and especially
to improve the lives of patients
suffering from this multi-factorial
and heterogeneous disease.
Within
this
framework,
the
Scientific Symposium “Towards an

members
from
participating
