Highlights
Greek participation from 2007
to 2013 in the FP7 European
project “Health” is presented
in a recent study conducted
by EKT. The objective of
Health research under FP7
was to improve the health
of European citizens and
boost the competitiveness
of health-related industries
and businesses, as well as
address global health issues
such as emerging epidemics.
The number of proposals with
Greek participation (2007-
2013) was 576 from which
113 were funded. Among
the 113 projects with 139
Greek participants from 46
unique Greek organisations,
11 were coordinated by Greek
institutions.
The overall success rate
for Greece is 20% whereas
the overall success rate for
all countries is 27%. The
coordinator success rate for
Greece is 8% which is half
of the average coordinator
success
rate
considering
all countries (17%). The EC
financial contribution received
by Greek organisations in FP7-
HEALTH projects was 46,15
Mio euros which represents
about 1% of total EC funding.

Facts & Figures for the Greek
Participation
The publication “Innovation in
Greek
enterprises
2010-2012”
presents the results of the survey,
conducted by the National Docu-
mentation Centre (EKT) as part
of the "Community Innovation
Survey" which is carried out
by all EU member states, is the
first official statistical survey on
enterprise innovation in Greece
since 2006. EKT, since the 2012
decision of the General Secretariat
for Research and Technology, has
been the organization responsible
for the collection & production of
official Research & Development
and Innovation statistics for
Greece. The survey was conducted
in collaboration with the Hellenic
Statistical Authority.
By providing data for the 2010-
2012 period and almost 15,000
enterprises with 10 or more
employees in the Industry and
Services sectors, the survey is a
basic means of understanding
innovation activities in Greece
and the importance it can have
in its productive reconstruction.
Data are presented on types
of innovation, the innovation
activities of enterprises, the
introduction of new products to
enterprises and markets, the role
of the public sector in supporting
innovation via procurement con-
tracts,theco-operations,strategies
and obstacles met by enterprises
in developing innovations. A num-
ber of interesting conclusions can
be arrived at from this survey.
Greece continues to innovate
despite the difficulties it is going
through and is 11th out of the 28
EU countries as far as innovative
enterprises is concerned. A total
of 1.9 billion euros is invested in
innovation activities.
An event about Open Education
was organized on Thursday, March
12 2015 in Athens, in the context
of Open Education Week 2015, by
the Greek Universities Network
(GUnet), with the support of the
Hellenic Academic Libraries Link
(HEAL-Link), the National Docu-
mentation Centre (EKT), the
Greek Free/Open Source Software
Society (GFOSS) and the National
and Kapodistrian University of
Athens. The event served as a
forum for dialogue between the
academic community and policy-
makers on the issues relating to
the extroversion of education.
During the event, the speakers
presented initiatives and projects
related to Open Education, such
as the new portal for Greek open
courses opencourses.gr, which
brings together metadata that
enable searching of courses taught
in universities and Technological
Educational Institutes and are
freely accessible and available,
Open
eClass,
an
e-learning
platform that will host open
academic
courses
developed
by the University of Athens, and
the open source platform Open
Delos for live streaming and
recording video lectures. EKT
also plays an important role in
Open Education in Greece, in
context of its institutional role for
enhancing Open Access policy,
as it dynamically supports the
organization and free availability
of scientific publications and data
in Greece, by developing open
software, electronic infrastructure
for content accumulation in
science & culture.
A new study conducted by EKT
presents the results concerning
the Greek participation in the
European Research Area (ERC)
Programme from 2007 to 2013
which is being produced as part of
the activities that EKT undertakes
as a National Contact Point for
the 7th Framework Programme
for Research and Technological
Development
(FP7)
of
the
European Commission. The ERC
programme supports investigator-
driven, frontier research that
may be carried out in any field
of research across the entire
spectrum of disciplines, without
predetermined priorities.
According to the results, 76
promising and established top
Greek researchers -35 in Greece
& 41 abroad- have been funded
through the ERC programme. In
this sense, 55% and 50% of the
Greek Starting and Advanced
grantees, respectively, implement
their excellent research at the
frontier of knowledge outside
of Greece. The ERC has invested
a total of 55.71 Mio € (0,8% of
ERC budget) in frontier research
in Greece in excellent projects
designed around fundamental
research or around well-defined
technological challenges. 27,35
Mio € (49% of the Greek budget)
have been granted to emerging
top researchers and 28,36 Mio €
(51%) to well-established leaders
in their field. In terms of subject
domains, 33,47 Mio € went to the
Physical Sciences and Engineering,
21,06 Mio € to the Life Sciences &
1,18 Mio € for 1 project in the SH
domain.
